February spoils Dublin based music fans with gigs in Odessa
WITH the January blues gradually subsiding and the pockets of the average Irish person a little fuller than was the case during the first half of January, February is already serving up a host of gigs for Irish music fans.
This week at the Dame Court venue, on Thursday February 5th @8pm, novelist and journalist Peter Murphy brings his Revelator Orchestra to Odessa with a fleet of special guests: singer- songwriter and poet Kevin Nolan, whose début album Fredrick & The Golden Dawn was one of the better releases from Irish artists in 2014; Rob Doyle, author of Here are the Young Men; and former Pogues bassist Cait O’Riordan. More guests to be announced.
On Thursday 12th February, Dublin based trio Swords emerge from writing- hibernation for a one- off show Odessa as part of “The Last Mixtape’s 1st Birthday”. What’s more, the trio have served up a fully- mastered, live cover of Portishead’s dirge ‘Glory Box’, recorded at a live show at Derry’s Smalltown America Records. The cover of the Bristol trio’s genre- defining, trip- hop classic is fitting, given that Swords have been undoubtedly influenced by Beth Gibbons and Co. Still very much feeling in festive spirits, Swords have dropped the cover as a free stream and download on YouTube, DropBox and SoundCloud.
